Hi all,
When I parked the car this afternoon I saw oily smoke coming from under the bonnet.
I have an oil leak at the gearbox end of the engine. It leaks so much now that after a hard run oil drips onto the flexible joint on the exhaust system and it causes smoke.
My mechanic sez G62Bs are renowned for leaking oil because the oil galleries are so close to the edge of the engine and the gasket is so thin.
I hope I still WOF's.
Does this sound normal?
cheers

Thankyou,
Hi all,
Gavin has fixed the turbo drain line.
He sez the head gasket is leaking,too.$800-$1100 for a fix.
This car is part of me.I will not use it to drive to work and save for the fix.
I have house insurance right now.
cheers
Wayne
Actually, all seems well.I will monitor coolant and engine oil consumption.
Will keep you informed.
cheers

Hi,
My Cordia definitely has a leaking head gasket.
I will keep you informed.

Oh ,well.
A head gasket is cheaper than putting a 4G63 in.
Maybe I was just unlucky.

Hi,
Since the turbo drain pipe was fixed a few weeks ago, yesterday I put in a new heater hose.It was the replacement to one that swelled up after a pretty hardcore cooling system pressure test.I took the car for a few drives today and all seems well.
I will continue to monitor things and I will keep you informed.
cheers

Wednesday I decided to take the Cordia for a pretty hard run on a 138km loop. There was still oil and coolant showing at the end of the run.
I checked the car this morning. The coolant resevoiur was empty but the radiator was filled to the brim.
The car used about 600ml of engine in 300km.
Earlier this week it was topped up and had used about 300ml in 300km.
I will keep monitoring things and keep you informed.
When I drive slow ,oil is not used hardly.
When I am pushing the car along it uses oil.
I will still not commit to getting the head gasket done ,yet.
How is everyone and their Cordia's going?
cheers
Wayne
Just had the Cordia for a run on a dyno with an exhaust probe from a new Bosch engine diagnostics machine up the exhaust .
The car is not running lean.
The new sparkplugs look perfect.
I guess I will just keep on driving.
hmm yeha just make sure you keep an eye on your Oil and water after every drive. (considering you have a leaky head gasket).
but iif you drive the car easy it shouldnt progess much further for a while.
At the end of the day the cars are at that age now that everyones cordias that have the Original untouched engines in them, are going to be showing signs of wear. My 87 AC hasnt really had much engine work since i got it, and its not using oil or water but it does lack power these days. (Time for a new engine or a rebuild).
Thats one of the prices we all pay for having cordias :) but its totally worth it.
Is it your main car? or do you have dayly driver as wel?
if so why dont you attempt to do the head gasket? Its not a undoable process if you have basic mechanical knowledge.
All you'll need is a tourqe Wrench and socket set really. from memory tool wise. :)
P.s. what did it make on the dyno out of interst? :P!
Hi,
The car was on the rolling road but the dyno wasn't hooked up.I wanted to see what mixtures were coming out of the car.It is perfect.
I am not very confident on mechanical stuff.I feel happy changing the engine oil and checking fluids and tyres but that is about that.
I am not totally convinced the head gasket is blown.I am using oil and coolant when working the car harder than a nana driver. But the TK test was clear,The cooling system held up to a pressure test and I am resistant to letting someone do all that work when I am not 100% satisfied it will be the fix.
I am back to driving the Cordia to work.I have a 1990 Corolla 1.3XL.I use the Corolla for trips where you basically have to stay to the speed limit on heavily policed roads and when something is wrong with the Cordia.
hmm i see your point. but if it is only when you drive it harder then normal, its understandable for it to use some oil/coolant.
But yeah $1000 bucks is a bit of money to spend on somthing you dont know if it will really fix it.
Well at least it runs atm hey :) like i said earlier. just keep an eye on the fluids and dont let them run low and she should last you a whiles yet. :)

You will probably find it's the flexible part in the oil return line from the turbo...........they tend to crack after continual heating and cooling down.......it's an easy fit though..........just remove, cut the flexible section out and replace with oil resistant hose, (Don't use heater hose), clamp it up, refit and away you go.
