Hey guys,

I have tried to start the cordia today after charging a battery, it cranks fine but doesn't fire...

I checked the ignition and replaced the distributor cap, rotor button and coil lead from the parts car, but still to no avail, there is a spark coming from the coil so I have pretty much ruled out the ignition system.

I then removed the crossover pipe from the throttlebody and looked in to see if the injectors were firing, and THEY WEREN'T... No fuel is obviously the cause... The injectors are seeping fuel from the seals on the outside of the throttlebody, but not sure if that would cause them not to fire? I'm doubtful!

I have also noticed a weird regular clicking from one of those emissions gadgets when the key is turned to 'ON', I replaced it with a spare one and that clicks too (see pic:) This device was connected to the plug with the red circle, I think this clicking might be related to the injectors not firing??? Any help would be awesome guys! :)

Isnt that just the boost sensor in the pic? Have you checked that the knock sensor is screwed into your block under the manifold correctly? Car wont start if its not.

From memory the boost sensor is the unit above the "red circle" in my pic, if this controlled knock, I don't feel it explains why there's no fuel injector activity... Yeah everything is in place, the only thing that has been done to the car was my mothers friend disconnected the battery... Ever since, it's been behaving like this... I thought it was the AFM, but obviously not...

Steve,

You have disconnected the exhange solenoid.........it's only use is during gear change to stop pressure build up on the MAP or BOOST sensor.

Have you checked the fuel pump? Can you here it when the ignition is turned on?

If not, just give it a couple of "whacks" until you can hear it running, they don't like to be situated in one place for a length of time.

The unit above the red circle is the MAP sensor. It doesnt control knock i was talkin about something else but i just re-read and realised you say your injectors arent firing? can you see them spray down the throat of the TB?

Nah I haven't checked the fuel pump, I'll have a look tomorrow once I've put some more charge in the battery...

If the fuel pump works, do you think it might be the ECU???

Nah, there's no spray or noise from the injectors.

If its not your fuel pump it will be one of your fuel relays. The cordia has 2 i think. Quite simple really, Ones behind the glovebox and ones under the hood im pretty sure

ahh righty, I'll check the pump first, then will look for those fuel relays! Might even change the ECU over to eliminate that if those don't sort it out...

I've got another question, in the picture above, I've been wondering what the plug circled in yellow is for? I've never had that connected to anything!  ??? it's female

Got Fuel in the tank? cheeky

Could be dirty fuel from sitting too long and blocked injectors?

Ok guys I got the Cordia started, I checked the fuel and it said half full on the gauge, however even with the battery disconnected it stayed at 1/2 way... I thought maybe the gauge was faulty and thus no fuel!

I took the mower fuel can and put 4 litres in the car, and the car still wouldn't start... I thought it may not run on only 4 litres, so I decided to take the fuel supply line off the throttlebody and crank it, there was a forceful spray of fuel... So fuel was not the issue!

Next thing, I thought I'd check the ECU... I had 2 spares and plugged one of them in... Gave the engine a crank and VROOOM!!!!!! She started immediately, smooth and beautifully! You wouldn't even know it's been a year since it last ran!

So there ya go guys, the ECU was the culprit! cool Thanks for all the tips and advice!

Great work Steve, but it's unusal that the ECU would just pack it in.

Okay, today I spent about 8 hours working on the braking system in the cordia... I replaced  the master cylinder, brake power booster, and both driver side hard brake lines (as the fittings were shit!)... I went over and bled all the the bleeders and noticed one consistant drip near the rear of the car and a couple of slow leaks at the master cylinder... All tightened up and rechecked... Nice firm brakes!

I have a question about brakes, will any leaks become evident when the brake fluid heats up with use? Or does it not thin out when it gets hot, coz it's not oil... I'm just wondering if there's no leaks now after pumping and applying pressure to the brake system, does that mean it's all ready to go??? LOL Probably a dumb question! haha

I accidently got the cordia running today, it wouldn't run for some reason before...So I kept cranking it and somehow it caught on... Now she idles wickedly!!! Gotta get some silver paint for those replacement panels I stuck on, then I'll register her and get it on the road!! Yaye!!! hehe Also got to replace the rocker cover seals, as they're leaking like a bitch, maybe even some sealant or something might do the job? What you guys reckon???

I was having trouble getting all 4 cylinders to run, the other day it ran fine, but today it was only running on 3, so I figured the spark plugs probably had a carbon buildup or were wet or something, so I exchanged the plugs with the new ones from the parts motor and now she runs sweeet!!!! I took her for a burn around the block, kindof going easy, I came around the corner in 1st gear, pushed the accelerator and I could hear the turbo spooling hard, I looked in the rear window and the street was filled with black smoke!

I don't believe it was quite to temperature, so figured that was why there was so much smoke (still running rich from being cold).... But it pulled like it was hot, so not too sure... I think Andrew's mentioned what causes this before, but I forget!

Any ideas on the smoke situation? Or is it pretty normal? cheers

You might have just blown the crap out of the exhaust system from sitting too long..........not to mention the carbon out of the motor.........as for running rich, the ECU won't allow full throttle until the engine is warm, but it only cuts the revs to 4500rpm.

Try running the car again.........I bet you won't see any black smoke.
