Hi everyone, Dropped the car into John Neale panelbeaters to get a spot of surface rust removed under the seal around the hatch.   Looks like it will now cost $1,500 to get that area redone.   I will add this to the bills I will have for other stuff and borrow a lot of money.   Usually credit is not extended but I have paid all my bills promptly before. It is nice to be trusted.   cheers   Wayne

Flaming heck! $1500 to get that area redone!!! wow! thats how much a paint job pretty much cost... although getting rust out is probably a little more expensive... sucks to here that man.

Hi everyone,

I inspected the Cordia for rust.In the top of both  sills  in a the space where the doors are   and where the panels are joined there is a a little rust spot on each side of the car in the seams.

Also the left frontguard down the bottom of the panel is rusting. The mudflap has acted like a water/mud trap.

And there is a tiny spot of rust on the inner side of the left door.

Dean,my panelbeter will also get the Cordia up on the hoist and inspect the car all over.

This shouldn't be too expensive. And it is the correct thing to do.Trying to fix the sills once rust had seriously developed would cost much more,I think.

How is the rust in all the Cordias out there?

cheers

Wayne

Hi everyone,

The car is now at the panelbeaters.

The little bit of surface rust on top of the left sill and the rusty left guard are being done.I dropped the car off Wednesday morning.I said Dean could have the car untill Friday.

An estimate for the sill was $80.I didn't ask  for a price on the guard.I will keep you informed.

cheers

Good on ya Wayne, it's good that you're keeping on top of it all! :) I need my tailgate replaced and can't find anything local... So need to get one from Adelaide but have no idea on how I'll be able to bring it back home to fit... I'm going to avoid driving it now until it gets replaced, coz the last thing I need is another defect! Hope your day is going well!

Hi everyone,

I have got the Cordia back.

And the invoice was less than the estimate.

It is wonderful to have the car back.It just idles around in a so much less stressed fashion than my 1300 Corolla.

I am going to review my budgeting.I loosened the monitoring and money is just evaporating. No regrets about what I have spent on the Cordia, though.

Hi Steve,

Just standard, mostly. A new Coby was put on midway under the car a couple of months ago because the muffler dude said the standard one he put in in 2009 was leaking where the stubs on the muffler go onto the piping.I thought that was pretty crap because the originals did 11 years for me.They looked new when I purchased the car in 1998.I was charged $120 for the Coby fitted.

I think there is a slight benefit in boost response down low in the revs.

cheers

Awesome, yeah I'm going to go back to a more standard looking muffler setup... Sick of being worried about the cops following me all the time! lol

Hi everyone,

The doors on the Cordia are starting to rust. The passenger side has a bubble on the outside. Both doors are rusting on the inside.

Still,it will still get a WOF.

I will try to find a job before I do anything.

And the head gasket will get priority.

cheers

eww yeah bloody rust hey.

My cordia's pretty much rust free really, cept for a bolt here an there. i got rid of it all when i painted it the first time round.
but my dads cordia needs some attention but its not too bad compared to allot of cordias out there.

My little bro will get that soon anyawy and im going to teach him the ways of building a car, so will remove any rust then.

But yeah its a battle with older cars.
One thing i've been wanting to get for them is electronic rust preventers, i got one on my lexus and it definatly doesnt allow any rust if you combine it with rust proofing. so one day i will get around to doing that to the corida's. but the units are quite pricey so its nota  proirity atm.

Hi Damien,

Really ,I don't mind.

My car is in good nick for a Cordia.

And it goes out in all weather.

I must say I love buying copies of the  British magazine Classic and Sports car. David Evans is always forking out money for his BMW 2002tii.I feel I am not the only person that wants to drive their car forever no matter the cost.

I used to be able to do that and it felt good.

Maybe I should try to  keep the miles down as much as possible even if I get a job.You have a good idea,Damien.

Parts are going to be an issue.

How long has the Lexus had that electronic anti rust thing?

cheers

Yeah mine goes out in all kinda weather, but i keep it undercover when its just sitting around not being used.

hmm mechanical parts arnt really an issue, as most parts for 4cyl mitsies are interchangable and lots of parts are redily avalible.
Just body parts that have become an issue.

Umm the SC had it put in when it was still in japan. Back in 98 from memory.
Car hasnt got a spot of rust on it. So they definatly work. which makes less work for me so i'm happy.

Hi Damien,

That is great news about parts availibilty.

For years people have told me "parts are going to be a problem for Cordia's".

Panel beaters can do the rest.

I wonder how much that electronic anti rust thing costs? I have spent thousands on my Cordia's panels.

What is the product name?

cheers

I bought a can of Brunox. You spray on  4 coats and an epoxy coat forms.

I have done a lot of touching up and also I looked inside the passenger door.I was worrying about  the clips holding the door rubber being locked solid. So I pulled the clips and door rubber away.

I will keep you informed.

cheers

I read I am supposed to paint over the top of the epoxy coatings.

I ordered  a can of touch up paint over the phone. It will be ready to pick up at 2.30pm. I hope to have the passenger door treated by the end of the weekend.

I will keep you informed

I epoxy coated the rust and painted  the driver's door , Tuesday.

I put the door trim back on this morning.

That is me  for the next little while.

How is everyone else coping with rust in their Cordias?

cheers
