Hi everyone,

I started checking over my car as part of a service.

I saw coolant by the thermostat housing gasket. The car has been going thru quite a bit of coolant ,lately.

This might be the cause.

I hope so.

How is everyone's cordia's going?

cheers

Wayne

Could be Wayne, yeah I've been working on painting mine... Turns out I didn't understand the concept of "wet coat" too well, as I thought going on and looking wet was enough, turns out I need to redo all my hard work, but all is not lost... the rust is gone, I just need to give her a light sand and try again, once I purchase some more paint!  haha

It is nice your car will have a generous paint covering.Shouldn't rust in a hurry.

Hi everyone,

My mechanic said the bolts holding the thermostat housing down were bottomed out.Probably not helping the old, homemade gasket seal.

New gasket, hose clamp and bolts went in.Hopefully this will fix the coolant usage situation.

Fingers crossed. The Cordia is using less engine oil ,too.About 1100ml/1000km.Absolutely fine.

Toyota say using 1500ml in a 1000 km is within spec on most cars.

Bugger!

Checked the car this morning and the overflow bottle was dead empty.People are saying the car should have burped itself by now.

I have had two pressure tests,a TK test.

Laurie reckons he had a Daihatsu with a shifting head gaket.Erratic as all hell.

I will get another TK test done.

Anyone got any ideas?

cheers

Is idle erratic when running the engine cold?.............BARP BARP then runs well above 2000rpm?

If so the head is allowing coolant past the guide.........easy way to tell if the head is cracked is to pull the plugs out and wind the engine over............you will see the "spray" out of the spark plug hole.

Hi Andrew,

The car runs pretty good,cold.

The radiator cap was checked (good) and a TK test carried out ( everything fine).

With the good result from the TK test I will keep driving the car and topping up.I will ask around and see if there are any new  ideas.

What do you think? I am doing the correct thing?

Thanks for your help.

cheers

Still going thru coolant.

But water is not going into the oil or vicsa versa so I will keep driving untill it does.I just use the Cordia to do loops and to feel good.

Well,Actually I took the car for a test drive after  seven hours cooling down.It was all over by about 7.46pm Thursday.

I woke up early this morning and the overflow bottle was empty.I dutifully added 200 ml of Prestone.

The bottle of Rislone had an 0800  support phone number on it.I rang at about 8.30am and Melissa answered saying just drive the car some more and all would come right.I took Dad for a drive that was about 75 km in length.

I have changed the engine oil as well. The car has done 250,030km.

I will keep you informed.

I drove 75 km Friday.

I drove 56 km Sunday. Everything looked peachy.

I was advised To keep doing longer trips to get everything to seal properly.

But I have been doing little trips to see if everything is fixed and if I can can go back to driving it to work(11.6km each way).

Yesterday I drove 4.6km each way to email.A little bit of coolant was used.

I will do longer trips ,after all.

Wednesday morning I did a loop. Then  Mum asked me to move the car out of  the shed.

When I checked the coolant Thursday morning it was down a tiny bit. This  morning was cold .I will keep monitoring.

I put some Rislone in the overflow bottle.Tuesday I went for a loop.

When I checked things a few hours after I had driven the Cordia when I went to check the over flow bottle there was this sucking noise when I popped the top off.The Rislone must have tried to effect a seal.

I emptied out and cleaned the overflow bottle and put straight coolant in up to the low mark.

I did a loop about two hours ago.I will monitor things.

I did a loop Sunday.

When I woke up 4.00am this morning I checked and noted a little bit of coolant had been used.

Maybe a big drive would get the Rislone to seal.

But I am only working 15 hours a week at the moment and feel it would be irresponsible to do so.

Catch 22.

I rang Rislone and they said I should really take the Cordia for a couple of long drives.

Ok,then.

I drove the car for a 138.5km loop on Thursday and  again Sunday.

This morning when I checked the overflow bottle the coolant was at the same low mark as Sunday morning .The car being cold in both cases.

I will drive around town and see what happens. The car would use a bit of coolant driving to work .

I will keep you informed

cheers
