Ok guys the time has come, i have pursued this rubbish 4g62t engine long enough. i have spoken with some guys at Speedworks here in New Zealand and they've found me a vr4 motor standard. I'm gonna drop it in, Link ecu it, and have it dynotuned.   Nothing huge or super powerful just want a reliable motor that goes and won't blow smoke or ruin my gearbox.   My Dream car is pretty much done. Vr4 in progress, not long now :)     (NOTE... THE MOTOR I GOT IS GENUINE EVO 3, BY ACCIDENT I BROUGHT IT haha) woops all good though)   should have listened to you guys from the start hahaha.   May aswell put in Nz performance mag now lmao!!   Will upload pictures and movies once shes done....   Yes steve... you will be very happy to hear about this conversion i'm sure.... when you coming over here for a drive? lol ;)

Thanks mate, yeah ive found a mint vr4 motor standard as...   vr4 block with Evo 3 head. standard td05 14g turbo. done 120,000kms   Gonna link G4 it and dynotune to no more than 300hp at flywheel.   should go alright ay hahaha getting it done next week   gonna cost me around $7000 for full conversion. including replacing all belts, servicing, fitting, ecu, tuning etc. whole package.   Not too bad i reckon. but hell, can't wait to line up those v8s and standard evos lol should be fun watching the looks on their faces from now on ;) hehehe

grats mate, you wont be disapointed, my vr4 is only pushing around the mid 170 kw and it is in another world compared to the 62, heaps more torque and once the turbo spools in first or second its hard to not light the tyres up... will be scareing the shit outa you for a long time to come :D

Heeey ^_~ Awesome thanks for the support guys.   I just found out aswell that the engine i brought is actually a Genuine Evo 3 motor (has 7 bolt crank)... by mistake we got that engine, but thats all good, the mounts seem to all be the same and go into cordia... but i have to make a custom 7 bolt flywheel and have a heavy duty rpm 4 puck clutch now, should still go into the gearbox as normal.    Sweet as scott, i will surely bring her up to show you hopefully this year sometime when she's all completed (promised you a little drive remember) *wink wink* haha   and yes i would be delighted if it reached NZperformance mag. lol be a shock i think, never expected to come this far with it at all.   Oh yeah also only puting a TD05 20g turbo and 510cc injectors in her now, reasonably standard. Brought an external gearbox oil cooler too, just in case she does get a little bit hot. :)   Anyway will update and get photos when i can.

I have Tried telling the guy that the gear box is good for 300hp but speed works is worried it will blow just on the dyno. I have looked at everybody elses vr4 cordias, EVEN BITZA said it is good for 220front wheel kw with external cooler and some more...   Will have to wait and see what happens though if it blows or not, box has done 200,000kms though, getting old, no rebuild   but if anybody has any ideas on another gear box that would go into my cordia without 'extreme difficulty' then i am keen as. Even if i have to modify and spend some money customizing a few bits and pieces, i don't care.   Thanks a bunch.   p.s somebody said a tp magna box was stronger and could take a good 400hp+ but i havn't heard this from many people.

Can you fit an evo 1-3 box in there and just run it fwd? that way you don't have to get a flywheel made up too

Yeah im not overly confident in my cordia gearbox,

Oh bro i'll look into that its a marvelous idea but i am sure most people have said you needa cut away at the fire wall to fit a vr4/evo box in there. sucks lol or any 4wd box for that matter...   but i'll look into it, even if its cost me a little bit... i was thinking about a smaller 1800 mazda GTR gearbox, they are alot stronger than the gtx mazda famila turbo boxes and run them fwd.   anyway good idea bro,   any other ideas are welcome. otherwise a rebuild of this box and strengthening is my only option lol if its possible.   cheers

Thanks man, yeah that info is interesting.   But the fellas down at speedworks said they will just take the approach of machining my flywheel and changing it to 7 bolt to go straight onto the evo.   I'm not going crazy with the power so i'll never need to change to another gearbox, i'll be happy with 300 for life i'm sure lol.   Cheers anyway man.   Hows your gearbox conversion and hunting going? you were using a gen 2 mivec box ay?

Yeap plan is to try that out but it's a big pain as its pretty complicated with gen2 gearboxs ...  So went out and grabed a gen 1 LSD instead that should be more fun lol but yeah live and learn yeah haha

Yeah a mate told me that those 1996  1600 mivec LSD's can fit straight in with Cordia gearbox and all. And you're using the same 1600 mivec gearbox as that model arn't you?  Are they strong enough to take the Torque of the 4g63?   Would be awesome i could put that gearbox, LSD and sort a clutch to match up with that... hmmm so if your doing that, what is the situation with the cordia flywheel? using that or the 4g63 one? or a custom one entirely?    interesting plan you got though. will be mint seeing another gearbox work in the cordia lol   That fulla in the ignition DVD    5THSIN he used a TS MAGNA box.... how would that work and where could we get one? lol

^ The Mitsubishi Magna is a Mitsubishi Diamante over here, just with a different name for the Australian market. As far as I know, the TS models were produced between 1994-1996 (the model name "TS" will probably be called something different over here). Not sure if any modifications would be required in order for it to work, but it's worth checking out.

Thats interesting.... wonder what flywheel i would use with that gearbox though... the brakes would prob go straight on from what i've seen on those diamantes... 92-96 shape... can't figure out how i would go about the clutch and flywheel set up. hmmm

lol Thanks steve... yeah i look back at my old noob self back then... and...  to be honest i still have a LONG way to go before i reach the knowledge of you, Bitza, Boostu, and the other fellas on here. But yeah i'm slowly learning little bits and it adds up over the years.   thanks for noticing though steve lol, maybe one day i'll be able to help out those other newbies like me :) ^_^   Anyway... I'm soooo frustrated at trying to find this 'Diamante gearbox type' and how the configuration would work in my car.   might post a new thread about this as not many people will come in here to read the gearbox question lol  Will call it.... "Diamante gearbox conversion" I reckon that's pretty fitting. cya all over there in that thread!

Won't put up any more until she's done as it's not going to look anything like this one i'm finished with that engine and bay. lol.     Everything will be nice and polished, painted, etc. should be nice. Put a TD05 20g in there too as you can see ;)   Will fill you all in when she is on the road.

Hey guys... i have an update on the cordia, its practically done but i have found out from someone that my Car kept getting put on the backburner to get other people's cars done first.  Kinda pisses me off considering i've been REAL Patient up to this point.

and i garantee heaps of those other guys have gone in there nutting and demanding their cars get done asap.

i'm one of the few that probably hasn't gotten angry at him lol.

Either way now i have a slight problem... i really need some vr4 twin pot brakes asap... i have found some single pot ones, and i have some evo 3 twin pot ones BUT.... The guy reckons that the Evo 3 ones have different spline or axle fitting and won't bolt up... but another guy said they went on but were just a bit close to the shocks.    Bloody really frustrating dealing with people who can't give me what i want. grrrrrr i'm never going back their, take ages and can't make up their minds!

Has anybody got anything to say about this please?
i always thought vr4/evo 1,2,3 were really the same type of brake and set up and they were meant to bolt up no worries.

stuck as!?! cheers ~_~

Brad,

Here in OZ the main change is the whole knuckle changed to early TM - TP magna. VR4/EVO will fit but the driveshaft diameter is 54mm, where the cordia needs 50mm.

Most of the big brake upgrades use the magna as a base.........so you'll find the VR4 discs and calipers will fit magna hubs............my GTO brake upgrade still uses magna hubs but 296mm rotors (re-drilled for 4 stud) and custom mounting brackets.

Bro thats weird coz a fella here has bolted on vr4 twin pot brakes and they have gone on without any problems...

i found out my Evo 3 ones wouldn't fit but vr4 seem to bolt right onto the Cordias here.
I have some vr4 single pot claiper hubs and i brought some twin pot calipers to swap over onto those discs, so should be sweet i hope.

I'm gonna verify this though when i get mine put on soon as things are sorted and put it back together.

Oh yes... New update on the Evo engine, We started the engine for the first time but there is a major problem.
The engine has a knock in it, as though a bottom end bearing is about to drop.

So have to take it all apart again and take the motor back to wreckers under warantee... or get my $1800 back simple as that.

I don't really trust their repair jobs from word of mouth, so i think i'll try getting my money back. Hopefully all goes well and i can
find another Evo 3 engine to drop in there (a good runner this time too)

Will try post up some pics of what it all looked like together though.

Till then... see you guys later.

Like i say Steve... come to NZ for a tour bro... ride in style lol!

But seriously, please don't be jealous of my situation... such a hassle having to take motor out and a waste of time.

Thanks though bro, glad you like it.

Can't wait to see some figures on the dyno of this thing. should be mint.

I wonder how Andrew is doing with his 2.3 project though?
